Many have mentioned the wonderful news of the public release and availability of all the images of Codex Sinaiticus, the oldest surviving Greek Bible, on the internet. After seeing some of the earlier images of the Codex on the site this past year, I have been anticipating this full availability. Here is the link to [...]
Another meme thingy started by Kevin Scull. I have been tagged by numero uno, Jim West.
According to Kevin’s rules:
1.) List the 5 primary sources that have most affected your scholarship, thoughts about antiquity, and/or understanding of the NT/OT.
2.) Books from the Bible are off limits unless you really want to list one, I certainly will not chastise [...]
I don’t know how I missed that Jesus Christ Superstar is also available on hulu.com. That now makes it three important Jesus films on Hulu:
Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
The Miracle Maker (2000)
If you are not familiar with Hulu, this well-designed site allows you to view on-line the FULL feature film for FREE [...]
Several have commented on the sad news about the death of renown scholar, Martin Hengel (1926-2009). His copious works have been, and undoubtedly will remain to be, influential for our uderstanding of Second Temple Judaism, New Testament and Early Christianity. He will be mourned and missed by many, including this neutestamentler.
The report from the Dorstener Zeitung:
Einer der weltweit bedeutendsten Experten [...]
Peter Williams (Evangelical Textual Criticism) points to Erwin Ochsenmeier’s blog which, with help from Luc Herren, shows us how to enter text-critical signs in your word processor. Very helpful!
From Telegraph.co.uk:
The fresco, which dates back to the 4th Century AD, was discovered during restoration work at the Catacomb of Saint Thekla but was kept secret for ten days.
During that time experts carefully removed centuries of grime from the fresco with a laser, before the news was officially announced through the Vatican’s official newspaper L’Osservatore [...]
Today marks the close of the Year of St. Paul (June 2008 to June 2009), a special jubilee year which Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed in order to observe the bimillenium anniversary of the apostle’s birth and to rekindle interest in his life and writings. Amazingly enough (or conveniently enough), the Pope announced on the eve [...]
Doonesbury Comic Waxes Eloquent on the Greatness of Jesus, Slams Old Testament God
By Benjamin Weiner over at ReligionDispatches
Doonesbury creator Gary Trudeau picks up an unfortunate thread in his latest cartoon, in which a character ponders the superiority of Jesus to the wrathful OT deity, and inferences are made regarding moneychangers and usury.
…
The Doonesbury comic strip of [...]
Today, I noticed that the Jesus film, The Miracle Maker (2000), is available to view in FULL at hulu.com. This is great! I recommend this film. The video file is in pretty good quality.
Although it employs claymation and is aimed more towards children, it provides a good filmic rendition of the Jesus story. Also, the film [...]
In light of some of my recent thoughts and posts relating to “cruciform” ethics – especially in view of a Christian posture towards torture and violence (e.g. here, here, and perhaps also here) – I’d like to point out that at Sibboleth Daniel Kirk offers a thoughtful post on “Cruciform Ethics and Evil Done in [...]
Happy Memorial Day.
I am a veteran of the US Marine Corps and have pretty much become a pacifist. So to celebrate the holiday, I would like to draw your attention to my short article on Paul and torture just published at Religion Dispatches, an online magazine dedicated to the analysis of religion and culture/politics. Click [...]
Recently GQ magazine posted a series of cover sheets used on classified Department of Defense daily intelligence reports, delivered by Donald Rumsfeld (Secretary of Defense) to President Bush, from March and April 2003. (article) (images).
These cover sheets show the misuse of biblical texts as captions on military photos, possibly to sanction such military activities. [...]
Over at Christian Theology and the Bible there is an eight-part series of excerpts from Stephen Fowl’s forthcoming volume, Theological Interpretation of Scripture, in the Cascade Companion series (Cascade Books; summer 2009).
Looks like it will be a good and worthwhile introduction to this emerging research trend in biblical/theological studies. Michael Gorman’s volume, Reading Paul, in [...]
